“Jeanette Jarville’s work shows us a pictorial world in which the figure and abstraction meld through the expressive power of colour. She has created her own language which goes beyond stylistic constraints and captures her intense spirit and boldness. Her paintings point out the versatility of an artist who moves from still-life, floral, landscapes and figures without compromising her identity. Jeanette has developed a distinctive way of painting and use of color that she explores within her own unique style.” – Irene Dual
I was born in Vancouver, BC and reside in Richmond, a city just south of Vancouver. I began drawing at a very early age, I had a natural talent in art and quickly became known as the class artist. I began traditional oil painting at the age of 11. I spent much of my teenage years experimenting and using different materials and objects in my paintings and sculptural work. I still enjoy incorporating new and unusual methods with that of more traditional ways.
After graduating High School with Honors and receiving a district art scholarship I was accepted into the renowned Emily Carr University of Art and Design. I was awarded four scholarships while there and received a Bachelors Degree in Fine Art, majoring in Studio; Sculpture and Painting, in 1996. I also took the opportunity to attend art school in Berlin, Germany, as an exchange student. While there I studied Art History, traditional oil painting and sculpting, spending one year in Europe. I was drawn to and influenced by the abundance of Old Masters works and the history within the landscape.
I paint with oils and acrylics on canvas, and for over 17 years I have also been painting on glass or thick clear acrylic panels in a unique reverse process. The reflection of light that comes from the paintings creates a luminescent and powerful effect, it glows from within. Resin poured paintings that many artists are doing today come close but still do not match the depth. My visions, images and ideas for the work I create are sometimes loosley based from memory but mostly from images imagined. I begin a piece and it just evolves as I go. I feel constantly driven to create and am happiest when my ideas are flowing from my mind into matter.
I am traditionally trained in drawing and oil painting techniques and find this to be a great foundation in building up my more modern, stylized painting that I am known for today. For almost 30 years I have been studying and practicing old masters and modern masters techniques in colour, value, contrast, and compostion. I have combined all the elements that inspire me which have evolved into my dramatic, bold and colourful unique style. I still keep up with my more traditional oil painting techniques just for fun, below are a few examples. Plus I love the smell of oils and paint thinner 🙂
